8-9th June 2018
University College London
Keynote: Professor Jane Hawkes
This two-day interdisciplinary conference invites new perspectives on the representation, significance, and development of Hell and other under-worlds in the late antique and early medieval period, seeking to explore this theme across a range of textual, archaeological, artistic, material, and visual media. We are particularly interested in papers which present new readings of the infernal, its features, and iconographies, and which interrogate Hell’s origins and shifting role in medieval Christian doctrine.
